'Why nights like this matter to the Isle of Man’s music scene'

I always enjoy visiting places on the Island I haven’t been to before, and Port St Mary Yacht Club was one of them.

Having previously attended independent promoter Waves of Wonder’s last event, I was interested to see how the atmosphere would change for an evening featuring Ruf Dug, Sarah Bates and GP Industries, this time in collaboration with RESTLE.

The pace was certainly different. While the previous event offered the soothing sounds of Hinako Omori, this time the room was filled with groovy beats and an energy that made it difficult not to dance.

Ruf Dug brought a fresh aesthetic to the small fishing village, creating a freeing atmosphere that seemed to encourage everyone in the room to let loose.

One of the highlights for me was hearing the story behind Ruf Dug’s sound system. One speaker had previously been used at BBC Studios, while another came from an old cinema. The pieces were never designed to work together, but somehow they did - adding another layer of character to the evening.

It was that kind of unexpected detail that made the event stand out, offering something you don’t always come across on the Island.

The two Waves of Wonder events I have now attended have also introduced me to a multitude of people I might not ordinarily have crossed paths with.

One half of Waves of Wonder is Cornelia, who offers a welcoming face as soon as you walk through the door, accompanied by an infectious energy.

A personal highlight was seeing Cornelia let her hair down and dance at her own event - something which, to me, perfectly captured the sense of freedom at the heart of the evening.

Events like these are important for the Island, creating spaces for people to discover new music, meet others and experience something different.

It is why supporting independent promoters such as Waves of Wonder, who put time and effort into bringing these experiences to the Island, feels so important.
