The 24 candidates elected to the House of Keys on Thursday will have a busy few weeks before the Isle of Man’s next Chief Minister is chosen.

Following the General Election, newly elected MHKs will be sworn in at a sitting of the House of Keys on Tuesday, September 29, at 11.30am.

Later that afternoon, at 2.30pm, the Keys will meet to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

The next significant step will come on Tuesday, October 6, when the policy proposals of candidates for Chief Minister are due to be published.

A week later, on Tuesday, October 13, the House of Keys will meet to nominate the next Chief Minister.

The sitting, which begins at 10am, will give each candidate for the position an opportunity to make a speech and answer questions from MHKs.

The Chief Minister is not directly elected by the public. Instead, the 24 newly elected members of the House of Keys will determine who is nominated for the position.

Once the House of Keys has nominated a Chief Minister, the successful candidate will be appointed by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor.

The new Chief Minister will then begin putting together their Council of Ministers, with other members appointed as Ministers, Members of Departments, and Chairs and Members of Statutory Boards.

The first scheduled sitting of the new Tynwald Court is on Tuesday, October 20, at 10am.

The process will continue into November, with members of parliamentary committees due to be elected at a sitting of Tynwald Court on Tuesday, November 17.

The House of Keys was formally dissolved on August 13 ahead of polling day on Thursday (September 24).
