Heavy rain caused problems on roads around the island last night.

Police urged motorists to drive with care following reports of standing water in many places.

A highways division sweeper was mobilised to clear water in the worst areas.

Roads to avoid were the Ballamodha Straight and also the Mountain where at one point police said there were not enough dots on the matrix signs to express how atrocious the conditions were.

The traffic lights on Peel Road at Glen Darragh Road junction were flooded due to a surging manhole but the road remained passable with care.

This morning, police said conditions on the Mountain Road had improved but there were still areas of standing water and foggy patches.
