Police are investigating after a woman was mugged at knifepoint.

The incident took place at about 1am today (Saturday) on Douglas promenade near its junction with Broadway.

The lone woman is believed to have been followed from the Glen Falcon Gardens area.

She turned left on to the promenade and was walking along the pavement on the land side of the road when the man walked in front of her near the Castle Mona Avenue junction.

He pulled out what is believed to be a knife and demanded her purse.

The woman was not injured in the incident, which was over in a matter of seconds.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

The suspect is described as white, aged from mid-teens to 30 years old, of skinny build and under six foot in height.

He spoke English and was wearing a black coat with a hood, a black scarf over his mouth and nose and leather style gloves, which were black with possibly some red.

Police are urging the public to remain vigilant.
