Whilst the crowds enjoyed the traditional Tynwald fair day activities in and around Tynwald hill, thousands more flocked to the arboretum to visit the Global Village.

Organised by the One World Centre, the Global Village was a festival that featured many, varied themes, such as ecological and environmental issues, global politics, climate change action groups and organisations that promoted ideas on sustainability, alongside street food from Africa, India, Jamaica, the Philippines, music workshops and charitable stalls.

There was also music from a visiting music collective, Moving Sounds, who held informal sessions around their colourful touring van, and also played a concert.

The team from Isle of Play also had games and improvisational toys set up under the trees, giving children somewhere to go to escape the sun and enjoy themselves

Wendy Shimmin, from the One World Centre, had promised that this year’s Global Village would be the biggest and best yet and she was pleased with how the day unfolded.

’It really was a fabulous day,’ said Wendy.

’There was a genuinely happy, festival feel to the day, down amongst the trees in the arboretum, and it was terrific to see the mix of people who came down to visit us.

’It really helped to identify what the Global Village is all about.

’I thought it showed the mix of people and cultures we have on the island, and encouraged people to look beyond our own horizons, and think about the island’s place in the wider world.

’Just by looking at the different groups and charities that were there showed that we can make a difference ion the world if we all work together.’
