Junior Achievement Isle of Man launches 'Think Big with £50 Challenge'

Manx charity Junior Achievement is inviting schools, youth groups, community organisations and workplace teams to discover what they could achieve with £50 as it launches its new ‘Think Big with £50 Challenge’, supported by Zurich.

Running from October to December this year, the initiative will provide participating teams £50 in seed funding, encouraging them to use creativity, entrepreneurial thinking and initiative to turn their investment into something bigger while raising money for the charity.

Junior Achievement Isle of Man is a Manx charity dedicated to helping young people develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed in education, employment and entrepreneurship.

To help spark ideas, Junior Achievement has produced a booklet showcasing a range of approaches teams could take to maximise their £50 investment. Applications are now open.

Teams can take the challenge in almost any direction. Whether organising a fundraising event, creating and selling a product, offering a service or developing an entirely new idea, participants will have the opportunity to test their skills, work together and make a positive impact in their community.

Sue Cook, chief executive at Junior Achievement, commented: ‘The challenge is all about showing what can happen when you combine a small amount of funding with a big idea.

‘We want teams to think creatively, try something new and take action. There are no limits on what they can come up with and more importantly, the money they raise will help support our work with young people across the island.’

Robert Hartnett, chief executive of Zurich International Life, said: ‘We’re delighted to support this initiative and to continue the successful association between Zurich and Junior Achievement Isle of Man.

‘In recent years we have seen first hand the impact that Junior Achievement has had on the local community, and the opportunities it creates for young people.

‘Earlier this year Zurich International employees led an innovative mentoring initiative called Debate Mate which was supported by Junior Achievement here in the island, and in 2024 the charity received support for its www.justthejob.im project from the Z Zurich Foundation, a charitable foundation funded by various members of the Zurich Insurance Group.’

The challenge is open to participants of all ages and is expected to attract a diverse range of teams from across the island, including schools, youth groups and workplaces.

Those under the age of 18 must take part alongside a parent, guardian or responsible adult.

Places are limited, with only 40 team spaces are available, so interested groups are encouraged to register early.

In addition to the satisfaction of growing their initial £50 investment, participants will have the opportunity to compete for four £100 cash prizes presented for the following awards:

With £400 in prizemoney available, the challenge offers teams the opportunity to have fun, test their entrepreneurial skills and make a positive difference at the same time.
