Island undergraduates showcased their summer placement projects at the Step Programme finale at Woodbourne House recently, presenting to an audience of hosts, fellow students, family members and invited guests.

A total of 29 students took part in this year's Department for Enterprise-organised Step programme, sponsored by Utmost, undertaking a diverse range of projects spanning marketing, data analysis, engineering, and information technology, gaining valuable workplace experience while contributing to real projects.

Chloe Cubberley was awarded the most enterprising student award for their project on the Snaefell Mountain Railway hosted by the Department of Infrastructure.

The runner-up award went to Rebecca Walmsley, who completed their project on marketing at Groudle Glen Cottages.

The Step Programme matches students with host organisations to deliver a specific project over eight weeks during the summer, while developing practical skills, building their professional networks and gaining first-hand insight into careers through their placements.

Reflecting on their experience, this year’s winner, Chloe said: ‘I wasn’t expecting to win, so it’s been great to see the work I’ve done recognised.

‘Step gave me the opportunity to apply what I’ve been learning at university to real-world situations, which has been incredibly valuable. It’s been a fantastic experience, giving me meaningful work with a real-world impact. I’ve learnt a lot from the programme and would encourage anyone considering it to apply.’

  • Best presentation: Antonia Camarda
  • Best presentation runner-up: Alexander Shimmin
  • Judges' commendation: Christoforos Karezis, Lula Thomas, Gavin Davidson-Worsley

A representative from the programme sponsor Utmost, Daniel O’Connor, was a member of this year’s judging panel and presented certificates to all participants and awards to the prizewinners at the Woodbourne House event.

Daniel said: ‘The Step Programme is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain real-world experience, build confidence and develop the skills that will help them thrive as they take their next steps into the workplace.

‘Seeing the talent, creativity and ambition on display this year has been truly inspiring, and it has been a privilege to be part of such a rewarding programme.’
