Douglas City Council will hold its annual Civic Sunday commemoration this weekend, bringing together civic representatives, community organisations and members of the public in the island’s capital.

The event will take place this Sunday, September 27 and will be led by Douglas Mayor, Councillor Steven Crellin JP.

Civic Sunday is an annual civic occasion which gives local authorities an opportunity to mark the role of the council and its elected representatives, while bringing together organisations and members of the community for a service of reflection and thanksgiving.

Representatives from other local authorities, government departments, ex-service and charitable organisations, as well as members of the public, will take part in this year’s event.

From 9.15am to 10.30am, the event will cause road closures on Prospect Hill (starting at the junction to Athol Street) down to Victoria Street towards Duke Street.

The proceedings will begin with a parade forming outside City Hall in Ridgeway Street. Led by Douglas Town Band, it will depart at 10am and travel along Victoria Street, Duke Street and Market Hill towards St Matthew’s Church.

A ‘Blessing of the Sea’ will be held shortly before the Civic Service, which is due to begin at 10.30am.

The service will be conducted by the Mayor’s Chaplain, the Reverend Dr Michael Brydon.

Members of the public wishing to attend are asked to be at St Matthew’s Church by 10.15am.

Civic Sundays are traditionally held during a mayoral year and provide an opportunity for the mayor and council to recognise the contribution of local organisations, community groups and individuals, as well as to reflect on the responsibilities of public office.

As part of his year in office, Councillor Crellin has also selected three causes to benefit from his 2026-27 charity appeal.

They are the Great North Air Ambulance Service, Forget Me Not IoM and A Little Piece of Hope.
