A man who was drunk and disorderly at a taxi rank has been put on probation for six months.

Twenty-six-year-old Ryan Christopher Shimmin was arrested during TT week after a row at the Victoria Street rank in Douglas.

Appearing before Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood, Shimmin was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecuting advocate Annie Bannister told the court that the defendant was at the rank at around 2.30am on June 5.

Police were on patrol nearby when they saw two males in a heated argument, one being Shimmin.

He was seen falling into the road, then getting up and swinging a punch towards another male.

Officers described Shimmin as having glazed eyes, unsteady on his feet, slurring his words, and swearing.

He continued to swear as he was arrested and taken to police headquarters.

In May 2025, Shimmin was fined £600 for disorderly behaviour on licensed premises, after he was abusive to bouncers at Jaks Bar.

Defence advocate David Clegg said that his client was not working, and was not receiving benefits, so he had no means to pay a fine.

Mr Clegg asked for a probation report to be prepared to consider the option of working with probation.

A short report, prepared on the day, said that Shimmin had been at a friend’s house prior to the incident and had drunk eight cans of Tennent's lager.

The report said that the defendant was diabetic and had been in a hyperglycaemic state at the taxi rank.

Shimmin, of Main Road, Onchan, said that he was looking for employment, but was going to sign on for Job Seekers Allowance, and hoped to do an electrician’s apprenticeship in the future.

He was ordered to pay the prosecution costs at a rate of £10 per week.
