An island youth band is inviting musicians to attend their first rehearsal for the 2026/2027 academic year this Sunday, September 6.

The Blue Train Youth Band were formed in the autumn of 2025, with the aim of giving young musicians the chance to showcase and develop their musical skills in a big-band setting.

King William’s College will host the first rehearsal between 10am and 2pm at its music department.

A spokesperson for the band said: ‘We would like to encourage all young musicians of around grade 3 standard and above to come along and experience the fantastic opportunities playing in a dynamic 20-piece big band can provide for both musical and personal development.’

The group features five saxophones, five trumpets, four trombones, electric and bass guitars, keyboards, drums, percussion and a vocalist.

During its first year, the band performed showcase concerts at the end of the autumn and spring terms, alongside public performances at Cathedral Isle of Man and Tynwald Day.

Its repertoire covers a range of musical styles, from swing classics such as ‘Woodchoppers Ball’ and ‘In the Mood’, to rock and pop favourites including ‘Born to be Wild’ and ‘The Final Countdown’, as well as Latin and funk numbers.

New pieces being introduced for the 2026/27 season include ‘Africa’, ‘Count Bubba’, ‘Fields of Gold’, ‘Skyfall’, ‘In a Mellow Tone’ and ‘All the Things You Are’.

The first session will focus on the basics of playing in a big band, with arrangements designed to make the experience enjoyable and memorable.

Musicians should arrive at 9.45am for a 10am start and bring a packed lunch.

Parents and friends are invited to attend a short concert at 1.30pm, demonstrating what the group has worked on during the session.
