An island theatre company is set to bring John Steinbeck’s classic ‘Of Mice and Men’ to the Gaiety Theatre later this month.
Three Legs Production will stage the play from Wednesday, September 16 to Saturday, September 19, with the production supported by the Isle of Man Arts Council.
Set during the American Great Depression of the 1930s, Of Mice and Men follows two travelling ranch workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, as they search for work in California’s agricultural heartland.
The pair share a dream of one day owning their own piece of land, but their friendship is tested by the realities of poverty, loneliness, prejudice and vulnerability.
The production is directed by David Dawson, who has worked on a number of recent island productions, including Douglas Choral Union’s ‘Chicago’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’, as well as Centre Stage’s ‘School of Rock’.
He also directed ‘Caillagh’, described as the world’s first opera written and performed in the Manx language.
Three Legs Production said the staging will remain faithful to Steinbeck’s own stage adaptation of the novella, exploring its themes of friendship, hope and hardship.
Of Mice and Men is recommended for audiences aged 12 and over and contains sensitive themes, violence and strong language.
Performances will take place at 7.30pm from September 16 to 19, with a 2.30pm matinee also scheduled for Saturday’s performance on the 19th.
As the play is part of some schools curriculums, there will be a performance dedicated for schools only on Thursday, September 17.
