The world’s largest floating book fair will visit the Isle of Man next month, bringing more than 5,000 book titles to Douglas Harbour.
Former ferry, Logos Hope, will be docked in Douglas from November 6 to 23, marking the first visit by a GBA Ships’ vessel to the island since its sister ship, Logos, arrived in 1984.
Local churches have backed the visit of the German non-profit organisation which aims to promote literacy, education and cross-cultural understanding. The decision for Logos Hope to make the journey to the island was only made in late August this year.
The organisation’s mission began in 1970, and its ships have since visited more than 490 ports across 150 countries and territories, welcoming more than 52 million visitors.
Through its floating book fairs, GBA Ships provides access to a wide range of literature. Crew members and volunteers from around 60 countries also work with local communities to provide practical help and support.
Andy Sheath, a Logos Hope crew member from Peel, said: ‘It feels like bringing my home to my home, two worlds colliding.
‘It's a wonderful opportunity for people in the island to meet us and experience Logos Hope right on their doorstep. This is such a special visit, especially given how much the island wanted to invite us.’
Andy has lived on the ship since 2021, alongside his wife Rebecca and daughters Elsie and Sofie.
Visitors will be able to browse thousands of books at affordable prices, covering subjects including science and technology, sport, hobbies, arts, cookery, medicine, languages, faith and personal development.
The collection will also include children's books, academic resources, dictionaries and atlases, offering something for a range of ages and interests.
Alongside the book fair, visitors can explore the ship's welcome area, featuring a short film and interactive displays about its vision and global impact.
Refreshments, including ice cream, snacks and drinks, will be available at the onboard Hope Café. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet crew members from around the world and hear about their experiences.
Admission will cost £1 per person.
Opening hours will be 10am to 10pm from Tuesday to Saturday and 1pm to 10pm on Sundays. Logos Hope will be closed on Mondays.
