A historic chapel in the south of the island is set to hold a final commemorative concert before the building and its adjoining hall are put up for sale.

The Isle of Man Methodist Circuit has announced that Ballafesson Methodist Chapel and Hall will be offered for sale this autumn following the decision to cease regular worship at the site.

The Mariners Choir will perform at a final commemorative concert on Saturday (September 12) with community members, former congregants and neighbours invited to attend.

The decision to stop regular worship at Ballafesson was originally taken by the local Church Council in 2024, after which responsibility for the premises transferred to the wider Methodist Circuit.

Rather than immediately putting the property on the market, the Circuit allowed time for prayer, discussion and consultation over its future.

Earlier this year, members of the community were also working to secure the future of the hall as a community facility.

The Friends of Ballafesson Community group was given a period of time to demonstrate whether the building could become financially sustainable, with hopes of expanding its programme of events and activities.

The hall has hosted coffee mornings and jumble sales and has been used by local groups, including the Rushen Twirlers dance group and musicians.

However, following further consideration of the costs and long-term viability of maintaining the property for community activities and other purposes, the Methodist Circuit has now decided to sell the premises.

Bookings will no longer be accepted after October 1.

Speaking on behalf of the Circuit, Superintendent Reverend Steve Ingrouille said: ‘It is with real sadness that we say goodbye to this beloved physical space.

‘We recognise that many people will look back with immense gratitude for the memories woven into this building, and we wish to thank all those involved in the community at Ballafesson Methodist Chapel for their tireless work over the years.’

The Methodist Circuit said the premises will be offered for sale this autumn.
