Fire crews were called to a property in Peel after a tumble dryer caught fire.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident at 1.58pm yesterday.

Before crews arrived, the appliance had been removed from the property and placed in the garden.

On arrival, the Incident Commander deployed a Breathing Apparatus team to extinguish the fire.

Crews remained at the scene for around 40 minutes to ensure the fire had been fully extinguished and the area was safe.

The Fire and Rescue Service has reminded residents of some simple precautions which can help reduce the risk of tumble dryer fires.

Residents are advised to clean the lint and fluff filter after every use, regularly check around the appliance and ensure ventilation openings are not blocked.

People should also avoid overloading tumble dryers and should not leave them running overnight or while the property is unoccupied.

Items contaminated with oils, solvents or other flammable substances should not be dried unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer.

Appliances should be maintained in line with the manufacturer's instructions, while residents are also encouraged to check whether their appliances are subject to any safety recalls.

Working smoke alarms should be fitted and tested regularly.

If a tumble dryer or other appliance catches fire, residents are advised not to attempt to move it or tackle the fire themselves.

Instead, everyone should leave the property, close doors behind them where possible and call 999.
