Garff Commissioners is planning to refurbish and regenerate the Laxey Promenade play area and public toilets in a bid to make them more inclusive.

However, it says the park is a long-term project whilst the toilets have more ‘urgent’ problems including water leaks and broken tiles.

The local authority has consulted school children and nursery groups to find out what they need and what they would benefit from in the area.

The commissioners’ administration officer Kezia Sproule-Craine said: ‘The existing park has been there for quite some time now, and has had small parts of the equipment replaced over time.

‘What we're looking to do is a full refurb and a completely new theme with all new equipment, to really make it a statement piece down on the prom.’

The commissioners added that it is hoping to utilise some of the grant schemes and lottery funding to help pay for the new developments.

Commissioner Melanie Christian said: ‘It is still in the very early stages of development, but we are looking at different funding options available to us, possibly applying for lottery funding and looking at other sources we could tap into.

‘We want everyone to be able to enjoy Laxey Prom, so we need to make it fully accessible wherever we can.

‘At the moment, we know there's problems with accessibility in the Department of Infrastructure harbour toilets, and with the toilets down the other end of the prom needing refurbishment, we think it's an ideal opportunity to make a difference and do a full refurb.

‘So although it is in the early stages, we are really keen that we move forward on this project. over the next 12 months or so.’
