An inmate has died at the Isle of Man Prison, the Department of Home Affairs has confirmed.

The prisoner, named as Taylor Jake Murphy, was being held on remand.

The Isle of Man Prison and Probation Service confirmed the death on Friday afternoon, saying Mr Murphy died overnight.

A DHA spokesperson said: ‘The Isle of Man Prison and Probation Service regrets to confirm that a prisoner has died at the Isle of Man Prison.

‘The deceased was Taylor Jake Murphy, who was being held on remand.

‘Mr Murphy’s family have been informed and are being supported. The death has been reported to the Coroner.

‘Police are currently working with the Isle of Man Prison to understand the full circumstances.’

The death will be subject to an independent investigation, as is standard procedure following any death in custody.

The spokesperson said: ‘It would be inappropriate to comment further while that process is ongoing.’

Mr Murphy had been charged with wounding another person with intent to cause murder. He denied the charge and was awaiting trial, which was due to take place in May next year.

The offences are alleged to have been committed on October 5 and 6 at Maughold and Port Cornaa.

He had pleaded guilty to charges of robbery, taking a vehicle without consent, possession of an offensive weapon, namely a knife, and two counts of theft.

The Isle of Man Prison and Probation Service extended its condolences to Mr Murphy’s family and friends.
