The Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian Society (IoMNHAS) will begin its 2026-27 winter programme of presentations at the Manx Museum this Saturday, October 17.

Author and society member Derek Winterbottom will deliver a lecture entitled St Adamnan’s Church and Lonan Parish, beginning at 2.30pm in the museum’s lecture theatre.

The presentation will trace the history of Lonan’s four churches, from the earliest times to the present day.

It will also explore the role of Canon John Quine, who served as headmaster of Douglas Grammar School before becoming Vicar of All Saints, Lonan, a position he held from 1895 to 1940.

During his time as vicar, Canon Quine was responsible for the restoration of the previously neglected historic St Adamnan’s Church, also known as Lonan Old Church, near Baldrine. He also served as president of IoMNHAS from 1916 to 1917.

The lecture will additionally feature the work of Archibald Knox, the Isle of Man-born artist and designer associated with the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Celtic Revival movements, as well as the Liberty & Co design house.

Following the presentation, attendees will be offered tea or coffee and biscuits, in keeping with the society’s usual arrangements.

Those planning to attend are advised to arrive early to secure a seat, while non-members will be able to make a voluntary contribution.

The society’s next winter programme event will take place on Saturday, November 14, when Laura McCoy will speak about developments in the natural history collection at the Manx Museum.
