Manx Utilities has officially brought the island's first ultra-rapid public electric vehicle charger into service.

Located at the Sea Terminal in Douglas, the new charger is capable of delivering up to 160kW of power to a single compatible vehicle, allowing drivers to gain more than 300 miles of range in around 30 minutes under the optimal charging conditions.

Chair of Manx Utilities, John Wannenburgh MHK, visited the site to see the new charger in operation alongside the project's lead Mark Christian, describing the launch as another important step in supporting the island's transition to cleaner transport.

He said: ‘This is another positive step in strengthening the island's charging infrastructure and supporting the growing number of people choosing electric vehicles.’

‘Douglas Sea Terminal is one of the Island's key transport gateways, making it an ideal location for our first ultra-rapid public charger.

‘This investment will provide drivers with faster charging and increased capacity at a busy and important site.’

The installation forms part of Manx Utilities' wider programme to expand reliable and practical EV charging infrastructure across the island.

The existing charger at the Sea Terminal remains in place, bringing the total number of charging bays at the site to four.

MU say demand for public charging continues to rise, with 476 charging sessions recorded across its public EV network recently, highlighting the increasing uptake of electric vehicles in the island.

The introduction of ultra-rapid charging is expected to reduce waiting times and improve convenience for residents and visitors alike, particularly at one of the island's busiest transport hubs.

Manx Utilities said the project reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting the Isle of Man's energy transition while ensuring drivers have access to modern, efficient charging facilities.
