A new monthly support group for parents and carers of people affected by, or concerned about, eating disorders is being launched in the island.

Manx Eating Disorder Support (ManxEDS) will hold the first session of its new parents and carers support group on Thursday, October 22, from 7pm to 8pm at Keyll Darree, Noble’s Hospital.

The group will then continue on a monthly basis.

The free sessions will provide an informal and supportive space for parents and carers to meet others, share experiences and learn more about eating disorders.

The group is open to anyone supporting a loved one with an eating disorder, as well as people who may be concerned about someone they care for.

Molly Spiers, chair of Manx Eating Disorder Support, commented: ‘Supporting someone with an eating disorder can feel lonely and overwhelming.

‘This group is about creating a warm, judgement-free space where parents and carers can learn together and know they’re not alone. You don’t need to have all the answers - just come as you are.’

ManxEDS said the group will be parent-led and relaxed, with no pressure for anyone attending to speak or share their experiences.

Those who would prefer simply to attend and listen will also be welcome.

There is no need to book and attendance is free. Parents and carers can simply turn up on the evening.

For more information, you can email [email protected] or message ManxEDS on Facebook.

Manx Eating Disorder Support (Charity no. 1097) is a volunteer-led Isle of Man charity supporting people affected by eating disorders and their families.

An eating disorder is defined as a mental health condition involving severe disturbances in eating behaviours, thoughts about food, body weight, and body shape, which can harm physical and emotional health.
