A planning application has been submitted for new padel courts at the Nunnery in Douglas.
The proposal includes the erection of a four-court indoor padel building, food and beverage facilities, toilets, a storage unit and wellness facilities (namely the ‘Wild Spa’).
The application also states the need for landscaping works, the implementation of drainage infrastructure and other associated works.
The site at the Nunnery, just off Old Castletown Road, is currently vacant, with the existing car park also set to be retained should the application be successful.
Johnny and Loni Evans submitted the proposal, with the company being listed as ‘The Padel Garden Limited’.
The planning statement reads: ‘The proposed development represents a carefully considered and landscape-led addition to the Nunnery Estate that responds positively to both the site's opportunities and its constraints.
‘By locating the development on an area of previously developed, under-utilised land, the scheme makes efficient use of existing estate infrastructure whilst respecting the mature woodland setting, historic significance and wider character of the estate.
‘The scheme will deliver lasting economic, social and environmental benefits, further strengthening the estate as a destination for business, leisure and community activity.’
Planning benefits listed in the statement include the redevelopment of previously developed, under-utilised land; creation of a high-quality indoor sport, leisure and wellness destination; landscape and biodiversity enhancements through new planting, habitat creation and sensitive ecological management; and efficient reuse of existing estate infrastructure, including parking, access roads and existing services.
A consultation on the application is now set to take place on Friday, November 13.
The planning application comes as Manx Padel confirmed earlier this month that work to implement ‘red courts’ at Noble’s Park is underway.
‘Now we’re just hoping the Manx weather is kind to us so we can keep the installation moving without any delays,’ a spokesperson said.
