Plaque unveiled to mark story behind eye-catching Isle of Man bridge

The story behind one of the island’s most eye catching bridges has been officially marked after more than 30 years.

A plaque outlining the background of the footbridge connecting the Manx Museum with Chester Street car park has been unveiled by bridge designers Trevor Norris and Allan Bright.

In 1990 the Isle of Man Government organised a competition to design and build a footbridge connecting lower and upper Douglas.

Island-based companies were invited to submit their designs and the competition was won by Mr Norris and Mr Bright from Glasspool & Thaiss in 1992.

The bridge was officially opened by the then chairman of Manx National Heritage in April 1993.

Port St Mary resident Mr Norris, who is now 92, said: ‘Over the years we’ve often said there should be some explanation of the background to the footbridge.

‘It only took us 34 years, in true Manx traa dy liooar style!’
