Record entries received for 127th Andreas Produce Show

The 127th annual Andreas Produce Show returned to the village on Saturday, attracting a record number of entries and a strong turnout of visitors.

Held at Andreas Parish Hall, the annual event showcased the talents of exhibitors across a wide range of categories, including preserves, home-brew, confectionery, vegetables, roots, potatoes and grain, fruit, butter and eggs, flowers, plants and floral art, crafts, photography and children's classes.

Going one better than last year, Carolyn Hirst took Best in Show with her painting of a wolf, while the reserve overall prize went to Lee Brown for a display of garden flowers.

Among the other major prizewinners were Juan Corrin, who won the EJ Brew Cup for blackberry jelly, and Sandra Burton, who received the IK Kelly Cup for best other variety of jam.

Jo Revill won the Kirk Andreas Commissioners Cup for best in preserves, while Nigel Revill took the Jack Corlett Cup for best in home-brew. Ann Corkill won the EM Gelling Cup for best Victoria sponge, with John Holt taking the David Hewitt Shield for the best cake baked by a man.

The traditional classes saw John Bolton and Glenn Quayle share the Dennis Watterson Cup for best suggane [traditional Manx Gaelic straw rope], while Ken Kewley took the AH Gelling Cup for the most points in the traditional classes.

Children's awards included the Ayre Playgroup Quaich for pre-school art, won by Fynn Corrin, while Florence Quayle won the EW Christian Cup for best child's painting.

Emily Gawne was named best overall exhibitor in the children's section, receiving the Bob Corrin Cup.

A spokesperson from the show commented: ‘Thanks to the Farmers Combine Ltd for supporting the schedule and show posters, with Andreas Stores kindly providing prizes for the children’s “hunt the footprints” competition.

‘A fantastic auction was also held of the produce that had been kindly left by exhibitors, with Michael Taggart at the helm, adding to the funds raised, which will be split amongst local charities and organisations.’
