The repair of the lift at Port St Mary’s town hall is being considered by the local authority.
Installed in 2012, it has always been problematic, said the commissioners’ office.
Gary McConville from manufacturer Pollock Lifts, emailed: ‘It would have been much better to have been specified as a marine grade lift.’ They can upgrade the lift and protect elements from sea air.
The cost of sending an engineer with parts, labour and flights would be around £2,000.
Commissioner Alan Grace said when installed: ‘The board was assured it was an outdoor lift. Would a glass cover work?’.
‘It would be expensive and not necessarily a solution,’ replied clerk Alastair Hamilton, who said the problem could be hydraulic.
‘It’s a recurring expense we have got to get sorted,’ said Andy Phair.
‘We should get an engineer to get a full report,’ said Rob Hirst. ‘Rather we get a proper survey of what’s needed.’
Because finances were discussed, the item was moved into private.
