The Steam Packet has installed cameras and pressure sensors around the Manxman’s propulsion system as investigations and repair work continue on the £78m ferry.
In an update today (Wednesday), the company said specialist teams from Lloyd’s Register had been working alongside its project teams this week to support the investigation into the problems that have kept the vessel out of service.
Lloyd’s Register is a maritime classification society and technical services organisation which works to help ensure ships meet safety and performance standards.
The additional monitoring equipment is intended to provide further data and insight into the propulsion system.
The company said specialist attachment points had to be drilled and fitted into the hull so the sensors could be securely mounted.
Work has also progressed on the vessel’s A-frame and P-frame support structures, which house the bearing carriers.
Specialists from Marine Shaft have been on site to help machine the carriers for the new bearings. Following precise measurements, specifications were sent to bearing manufacturer SKF, which is producing the replacement components.
The new bearings are expected to arrive later this week, the Steam Packet said.
The latest update comes as the Manxman remains out of service, with the operator still working towards its return by the end of November.
The company has been issuing regular updates on the repair programme, which includes investigation work alongside repairs and maintenance.
The Steam Packet has previously estimated the cost of repairs and dry-docking at about £5m.
An assessment from the Isle of Man Ship Registry, released by the Department of Infrastructure this week following a Freedom of Information request, raised the possibility that the damage could be linked to the vessel’s design rather than conditions in Douglas Harbour. The assessment did not establish a definitive cause.
