Douglas Central MHK and current Treasury Minister Chris Thomas has put his name forward for the role of Chief Minister.

A third name, from among the new MHKs elected for the first time on September 24, is widely being touted but they have yet to announce this publicly.

Mr Thomas emailed Tynwald members on Monday with a copy of his policy statement in the context of the Keys election for nomination as Chief Minister.

He explained: ‘It is based on my general election manifesto but I have found your suggestions to date invaluable.’

Mr Thomas has also tabled a Government Programme motion for Tynwald.

It states that the Council of Ministers should publish by the end of November a document for debate in Tynwald which sets out the current challenges and opportunities that face the island and provides a prioritised policy agenda, action plan and legislative programme to address them.

Annual reviews and revisions would then be laid for debate and approval each October.

Mr Thomas told members: ‘This could provide us an opportunity to discuss opportunities, challenges and ways forward in public.

‘I would circulate a second document about my candidacy and suitability for the role depending on ongoing discussions. Let’s just do it together!’

Meanwhile, Onchan MHK Rob Callister has withdrawn after failing to secure sufficient support from his colleagues.

He told Tynwald members: ‘While my proposals were warmly received by many businesses, charities, third sector organisations and constituents, it has become clear that I do not have sufficient support within the new House of Keys.

‘As a result, I will not be putting my name forward for the position.

‘Naturally, I am disappointed. However, I fully respect the democratic process and the decisions that elected Members must make. Standing for Chief Minister was never about personal ambition alone. It was about offering a clear vision, practical solutions and a positive direction for the Isle of Man.’

Candidates wishing to put their name forward forward for the top job in Manx politics have until 12 noon today to do so.

Tynwald members will be informed of the runners and riders at 2pm and the list of candidates will be announced publicly by 5pm.
