Isle of Man Veteran Athletes’ Club hosted the second of the Hansard Global handicap races at the NSC recently.
Although it was a cloudy evening, the wind had dropped and, not being too cold, conditions were very good around the outer track.
The competition consisted of a 10km handicapped run and a 5km handicapped walk, with athletes starting at different times according to their best recent time for the distance.
This year’s event witnessed the first wheelchair athlete, Mike Ryan, who mentioned how tricky the constant camber is on his chair but who set his best 10k time to date.
Although the event was for senior athletes (18+), the club agreed to time seven juniors as guests, outside the competition.
Rosa Nelson Rohrer took the honours in the 10km in a handicap time of one hour three minutes and seven seconds, with second place going to Moira Hall ahead of Margaret McCabe who completed the top three.
Fastest on actual time was Pete Callin with 40m 51s followed by Stephen Schuster with 42.25.
In the 5km walk it was Phill Swales who led the field home in a handicap time of 40 minutes and 36 seconds, taking the win on corrected time ahead of Maxine Lace and Yanisa Sananveah in second and third respectively.
Fastest on actual time was long-distance specialist Sophie Watterson-Jones with an impressive 28:41 in by far the shortest race she has taken part in to date.
