Manx amputee footballer Sean Jackson is already considering a potential half-marathon in the Isle of Man after completing his first race in Manchester recently.
The England men’s amputee international team captain took on the ASICS Manchester Half earlier this month, describing the race as a success and saying he was pleased with his finishing time.
Alongside challenging himself, he was raising money for the England national amputee football team, which he represents, to help fund its trip to the World Amputee Football Federation World Cup in Mexico in November.
Jackson, who grew up in the island and previously played for Marown, Laxey and St George’s, told Media Isle of Man that adapting to longer distances had presented challenges.
‘It has been tricky adapting to running the longer distances,’ he said.
‘I had to get a new prosthetic to help with things and reduce the pain. Completely different training to usual with me normally being on crutches a lot of the time.’
The former Ballakermeen student, who plays for Everton in the England Amputee Football Association League, took up running after completing his first parkrun in 2024.
His half-marathon has also helped raise awareness of the England team’s fundraising campaign ahead of next month’s Amputee Football World Cup in Latin America.
Jackson said media coverage from BBC Radio Manchester, the Manchester Evening News and Runner’s World magazine had helped direct attention towards the appeal, which has now raised more than £60,000.
The team is self-funded and relies on donations to cover the costs of representing England internationally.
Jackson, who was named captain earlier this year, is preparing to lead the side at the tournament.
And having completed his first half-marathon, he is already looking at the possibility of another challenge.
‘Definitely would love to do another half-marathon, maybe back in the island,’ he said.
