Legendary Northern Ireland rally co-driver Terry Harryman passed away recently at the age of 87.

He won no fewer than six rounds of the World Rally Championship between 1983 and 1985 with Finnish ace Ari Vatanen.

His record on the Manx International Rally was outstanding: 1972 - sixth with Dessie McCartney (Ford Escort RS1600); 1974 - second with McCartney (Porsche); 1975 - second with the same; 1978 - third with Brian Nelson (Porsche); 1980 - fourth with McCartney (Vauxhall Chevette); 1981 - third with Malcolm Wilson (Escort); 1983 - second with Vatanen (Opel Manta 400).

He and Vatanen had a massive crash on Staarvey the previous year (hence the jump becoming known as ‘Vatanen’s jump’), and in 1983 Harry famously exclaimed ‘Dear God’ in the onboard video footage following Vatanen’s incredible save as they almost crashed into the Killabrega Gate at the bottom of Tholt-e-Will.

Harry also achieved success alongside Paddy Hopkirk, Michèle Mouton and Mark Lovell.
