The Isle of Man will go to the polls on Thursday, September 24, to elect 24 Members of the House of Keys for the next five-year term.
Each of the Island’s 12 constituencies will elect two MHKs, with eight candidates standing in Ayre and Michael.
Here is a look at the candidates hoping to secure one of the two seats in the constituency.
* Julia Bell - Independent
Julia Bell is a mental health nurse and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist making her first attempt at elected office. Her priorities are education, health and housing, with her professional background giving healthcare particular prominence in her campaign.
* Stephen Broad - Independent
Stephen Broad, who runs a road haulage and crane hire business, is another first-time candidate. He has highlighted government reform, keeping young people in the island and ensuring infrastructure, healthcare and schools are fit for purpose. His campaign also calls for greater scrutiny of government decisions and stronger engagement with residents and businesses.
* Alfred Cannan - Independent
Alfred Cannan, the sitting Chief Minister, is seeking another term representing Ayre and Michael. He says the island faces significant challenges but also opportunities, with his campaign focused on delivering what he describes as meaningful and achievable policies rather than simply identifying problems.
* Phil Corkill - Independent
Philip Corkill, a builder who previously contested the constituency in 2021, is standing again as an independent. He says his focus would be on building resilience in local communities and rebuilding public trust, arguing that many of the concerns raised by residents five years ago remain unresolved.
* Steve Curphey - Independent
Steven Curphey, a Ballaugh Parish Commissioner since 2021, is standing for the first time. His priorities include government, departmental and Civil Service reform, fairer taxation and National Insurance reform, and greater budgetary control within the health service. He says political decision-making needs to be more accessible and accountable.
* Tim Johnston - Independent
Tim Johnston, one of the constituency's sitting MHKs, was first elected in 2021 and is currently Enterprise Minister. His campaign focuses on the economy, the cost of living and greater self-sufficiency, while warning that efforts to become more resilient to global instability must be balanced against their domestic cost.
* Mary Phillips - Independent
Mary Phillips, a lollipop lady, dinner lady and Lezayre commissioner, is making her first General Election bid. Health and social care is her foremost priority, with education and infrastructure also among her main concerns. She is calling for an independent audit of health and social care spending.
* Paul Weatherall - Liberal Vannin
Paul Weatherall, chair of Liberal Vannin and a Ballaugh Parish Commissioner, is contesting his second General Election after standing in 2021. He says many of the issues identified then remain unresolved, with his priorities including supporting businesses, housing, and health and social care.
