A sofa surfer has been jailed after stealing £155 worth of perfume and aftershave from Boots chemist, in Douglas.

Anthony John Richard Lyons, aged 31, who said he was currently sofa surfing, was sentenced to six weeks in jail after admitting theft.

But High Bailiff Jayne Hughes added another eight weeks to his sentence as he was in breach of a suspended sentence, bringing his total jail time to 14 weeks.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how Lyons was seen on CCTV on May 13 taking aftershave and perfume from shelves and putting it into a carrier bag. He left the store without paying for the items.

Lyons was later arrested but told police he could not recall his activities on the day offence due to medication he was taking at the time.

When shown CCTV footage of the theft, Lyons gave ’no comment’ responses to all further questions.

Lyons was handed the 12-week suspended sentence in April after a burglary at Food Paradise in Alder Road which took place in January.

Advocate Paul Rodgers said: ’We would ask the court not to activate the suspended sentence. It was a low value theft. Mr Lyons has had an issue with his mental health and substance misuse.’

High Bailiff Mrs Hughes activated eight weeks of the 12 weeks suspended sentence and told Lyons: ’You have a long history of offences of dishonesty and theft.’
