An amber weather warning has been issued for coastal overtopping overnight into Wednesday, with a number of roads set to close.

The warning has been set for a three-hour time period from 12.30am until 3.30am on September 30.

Areas most likely to be affected include Douglas Promenade, Laxey Promenade, Ramsey Promenade, the western part of Shore Road in Rushen, and to a lesser extent Castletown Promenade.

Inner harbour flooding is also expected at Riverside Industrial Estate, the banks of the Sulby River on Gardener's Lane, Ramsey and the Tongue, Douglas.

As a result of the warning, the following roads are set to be closed from midnight until 4am: King Edward Road, Douglas (from Summerhill to Port Jack); Mooragh Promenade, Ramsey; Queens Promenade, Ramsey; Castletown Promenade; and Laxey Promenade.

Sandbags will also be placed at Strathallan Crescent, Douglas; Market Square, Ramsey; Pump House, Castletown Promenade; and Laxey Promenade.

Further precautionary measures include the installation of flood boards at access points within the sea defence wall on Harris Promenade, Douglas and the closure of harbour gates at Castletown Harbour.

A spokesperson from the Department of Infrastructure commented: ‘The public is urged to avoid affected coastal areas during the warning period, follow all road closure signage and barriers, and take extra care around exposed coastlines.

‘Conditions may change rapidly, and further updates will be issued if required.’

A spokesperson from the Met Office added: ‘Sustained strong to near-gale force south-easterly winds overnight will cause moderate coastal overtopping of water and significant debris along exposed coasts around the time of high tide.

‘Localised minor inner harbour flooding is also expected to potentially impact several properties in Douglas and Ramsey.’

An amber weather warning is typically issued when there is the risk of severe weather impacting on work, schools and travel, as well as some damage in places and a risk of injury.
