The proposed flood defences and West Quay enhancement scheme have been discussed at a meeting between Ramsey Commissioners, Infrastructure Minister Tim Baker and an officer from his department.
The commissioners’ chairman, Andy Cowie, indicated at the outset that the board was broadly in support of the scheme, but did have concerns.
One of the concerns is about the type of paving stone material that would be used. It was explained that the department would use rounded paving in the scheme and an assurance was given that the department would engage with the commissioners to agree on the material to be used. The general road surface would be asphalt.
The department was confident that the proposed glass flood defence wall was a good solution, was easy to maintain and would have a 20-30 year lifespan.
It was further explained that the northern side of the harbour is not protected by this scheme, nor are the cellars of West Quay properties.
Updated plans would be provided once the scheme is finalised and the department would be happy to consult widely and attend a public meeting to discuss the proposals.
