HSBC won the award for enhancing wellbeing in the workplace at last year’s Isle of Man Newspapers’ Awards for Excellence.

But even the bank’s well-developed support programmes were increased during the pandemic.

Patrick Greene, who is chair of the bank’s wellbeing programme for the Isle of Man and Channel Islands said: ’Covid-19 has undoubtedly changed the world, especially the world of work. The pandemic forced us, and businesses globally, to assess our wellbeing programmes, ensuring our people and their welfare was at the forefront of every decision.’

HSBC already ran a comprehensive wellbeing programme and dedicated mental health first aiders but an employee survey revealed that people wanted more guidance on mental health and wellbeing, so they held a festival of wellbeing.

Patrick explained: ’Over a week, people took part in healthcare talks, Zoom fitness events, meditation, yoga, mental health awareness, stress management and resilience training.

’We gave special attention to our colleagues who manage teams, as they were under pressure looking after their people and handling an increased workload.’

He added: ’Flexible working isn’t a new concept for HSBC. For many years we have pro-actively encouraged our people to work flexibly and from home when they can. These practices are commonplace today, allowing even more of our people to balance the demands of family and home with those of work.’

And Mr Greene can see a silver lining coming out of the Covid experience. He said: ’It’s impossible to talk about the pandemic without discussing wellbeing, which is unquestionably a positive outcome.

’I intend to keep on talking and I’d encourage every company, organisation and business in the island to join in the wellbeing conversation.’
