Capital International is hoping to build on its success at last year’s Media Isle of Man’s Awards for Excellence when the event returns later this year.

The Douglas-based provider of banking services was named Business of the Year at last year’s awards, with chairman Anthony Long describing the win as a particularly memorable moment after the company had been nominated alongside a strong field of competitors.

Mr Long said a number of Capital International employees from its Circular Road office were in attendance on the night and that he had not expected the business to take the award.

‘I was elated because I really didn't think that we were going to win it against the competition that we were up against,’ he said.

‘When I heard our name being called out, it was fantastic.’

The company will be returning to this year’s awards and has submitted an entry for Digital Innovation of the Year.

Mr Long said the application focuses on work Capital International has undertaken over the past 18 months to develop its client interfaces.

‘We've done an awful lot of work building and developing our client interfaces, and we've used that case study and that journey to support our submission,’ he said.

The Capital International group of companies provides banking, asset management and investment platform services to clients across the globe with offices in the Isle of Man, Jersey, South Africa and the Dubai International Financial Centre.

Its banking operation serves corporate and high-net-worth individuals, while its asset management service provides a range of actively managed investment strategies.

Capital International also offers an investment platform service, which enables clients to invest across a range of assets to manage portfolios.

The awards entry comes during a significant year for Capital International, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Mr Long said the company had grown from four people when it was established to around 280 employees today.

He said the anniversary had provided an opportunity to reflect on the business's development while also looking ahead to its next phase.

‘I find it amazing that we have been in business for 30 years, and that we have grown from four people to 280-odd people today,’ he added.

‘We've done some great things, but we've had some tough times and we've lived through a very dynamic period in history when you look back at the global situation over the last 30 years.’

Capital International has also marked its anniversary through its sustainability and charitable work.

As part of its '30 by 30' initiative, the company has supported 30 charities during its 30th anniversary year, with employees becoming involved in various projects.

Mr Long said the company had deliberately kept its anniversary celebrations relatively low key, with a focus on its people, clients and community partnerships.

‘The biggest event for us this year actually was the opening of this building,’ he said. ‘We did a big refurbishment project over the last two years, and we've used our 30th anniversary to showcase the facilities that we've built here.’

Capital International will find out whether its Digital Innovation of the Year entry has been successful when this year's Awards for Excellence winners are announced at the Villa Marina on Thursday, November 19.
