Michael Commissioners’ says its village fun day will raise money for victims of the Nepal and Tibet floods.

The local authority added the fundraising decision was made before the ‘tragic events’ started but raffle and bake sales will go towards the Pahar Trust.

Kirk Michael has been twinned with the village of Ghamrang since 1993 and has since ‘actively’ raised funds for educational and infrastructure projects.

The fun day is taking place this Sunday, September 6 from 12pm to 4pm at Kirk Michael Football Club on Balleria Road.

It adds that the decision was made by Michael Young Commissioners and its thoughts are with the communities who have been affected by the recent devastating events.

The death toll in Nepal from devastating floods on the border with Tibet has crossed 1,000, according to the country's disaster agency.

More than 3,900 people are still missing, including more than 600 workers believed to be trapped inside a vast network of mud-filled tunnels at hydropower sites along the Trishuli River.

Engineers have been pumping air into the tunnels in an effort to reach those who may be trapped.

A rescue team managed to enter one of the tunnels but was forced to withdraw after finding no-one inside.

Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah said on Monday that 279 people had been rescued from the sites.

The complex rescue operation is being led by an international team of Chinese and Nepalese military personnel, with experts from India, South Korea and Australia also taking part.

Nepal relies heavily on hydropower and has spent years developing the projects along its mountainous river systems.

At least 11 projects either completed or under construction were damaged in the floods, the BBC reports.

Rescuers began pumping air into a tunnel over the weekend, but the families of those trapped say that should have been done earlier.
