An arts and culture organisation are hosting a competition to find a new folk tune or routine.

Culture Vannin have announced the competition to write a new composition or choreograph a new folk dance routine based around the theme of ’Boaldyn’, the Manx Gaelic name for May.

There are three categories open to enter, with prizes available for a new song in any genre , written in either in Manx Gaelic or English, accompanied or unaccompanied, a new tune, suitable to be played on any instrument or a new dance solo.

The dance solo could be written around existing, lesser-known tunes, such as ’Moghrey Laa Boaldyn’ or another Manx trad tune of your choice.

There are prizes of £150 for adults and £50 for under-16s on offer.

The deadline for entries is on Sunday, May 31.

Culture Vannin describe May as a ’magical time of year’ and there is a wealth of folk tales, customs and stories surrounding the time, such as the making of croish cuirns and the burning of the buitch, to rid the land of bad luck and misfortune.
