A Ramsey builder who damaged a property after a row over payment has been sentenced to 120 hours’ community service.

Shane Edward Kinrade caused £3,330 worth of damage at the Old Bakery in Christian Street in Ramsey.

The 40-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to cause damage, with the case adjourned for a probation report.

We previously reported that the Old Bakery was being converted into dwellings at the time, but no-one was yet living there.

Kinrade was hired to carry out work for the complainant as part of the renovations.

However, after completing the work there was a dispute over the £400 that he had requested in payment.

The complainant had said they wanted to inspect the work.

But on June 30, Kinrade was said to have obtained keys for the property from another builder and gone there.

He was said to have entered and caused damage with a hammer.

It was initially estimated at £5,000, but on September 1, the prosecution submitted a recalculated amount of £3,330.

Kinrade was interviewed by police and said that he had requested £400 for 16 hours’ work.

He admitted that he had ‘lost his head’ after not receiving payment.

A probation report said that the defendant worked six or seven days a week, so community service would be difficult, but he was willing to do it.

Defence advocate Kaitlyn Shimmin said that her client had been assessed as a low risk of reoffending, and it had been 10 years since his last offence.

Ms Shimmin said that Kinrade had said that, as soon as he had committed the offence, he had regretted it.

The defendant was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs, as well as the £3,330 compensation.

He will pay at a rate of £50 per week.
