Driving under the influence of cocaine and its metabolite benzoylecgonine has cost a motorist a £1,400 fine and a two-year ban.

Adam Daniel Price admitted both offences and was also ordered to take an extended test after his ban.

Prosecuting advocate Annie Bannister told the court that police were on patrol on Loch Promenade on March 22, at 1.40am.

They received information that Price was seen staggering to his car at Lord Street, then driving off.

Officers stopped the vehicle on Harris Promenade, outside the Villa Marina Gardens.

Price, 22, was described as smelling of alcohol, slurring his words, and having glazed eyes.

He failed a roadside breathalyser test.

At police headquarters, officers reported Price’s behaviour was consistent with drug use, as he was making ‘gurning jaw movements’ and his pupils were dilated.

A drug wipe test proved positive for cocaine and a blood test later produced results of 24 for cocaine, which has a legal limit of 10, and 91 for benzoylecgonine, which has a limit of 50.

During an April court appearance, Price entered a not guilty plea to failing to provide a sample of breath at police headquarters.

However, on August 18, the court heard that the prosecution was offering no evidence in relation to that, in light of the admitted drug offences.

Defence advocate Paul Glover said there had been no criticism of his client’s driving and referred to medical letters, which said the defendant had been struggling with anxiety and depression.

Deputy High Bailiff Ms Braidwood told Price that he was perhaps lucky that the prosecution hadn’t proceeded with the other charge, and added: ‘It’s concerning information that you were staggering to get in your car.

‘You’ve tested over the limit for cocaine and its metabolite, but I’ve also borne in mind you failed a roadside breathalyser test.’

Price, of Whitebridge Road, Onchan, will pay at a rate of £100 per month.
