A 24-year-old man who barricaded his mother in a bedroom using a ladder has been put on probation for 12 months.
Brandon James Robley then damaged a tumble dryer and a door.
He pleaded guilty to property damage and was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs.
Prosecuting advocate Rachael Braidwood told the court how police were called by Robley’s mother on November 3 at 12.55am.
She said that her son had been drinking and playing loud music so she had removed a speaker from the room.
Robley was then said to have started kicking things before using a ladder to barricade his mother in her bedroom.
She then heard banging noises and Robley shouting but she managed to get out of the bedroom.
When she went downstairs she saw a large dent in the tumble dryer and the living room door was off its hinges.
A neighbour said that they had heard shouting over the last seven days which had been getting worse, and on the night in question heard Robley’s mother pleading with him to stop for around 30 minutes.
He was subsequently arrested and said: ’Do you have any evidence?’
When interviewed at police headquarters Robley said that frustration had gotten the better of him.
A probation report described Robley as a ’vulnerable young man’ who was already receiving assistance from mental health services and was going through a difficult time.
The report said that Robley ’usually has a very close relationship with his mother but had relied on alcohol as a means of trying to manage his feelings’.
Defence advocate Matthew Wilshaw asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea and said that he was ’somebody who is crying out for support’.
Magistrates’ chair David Craine told Robley: ’We have heard this was quite a frightening experience for your mother. Clearly you need to curb that temper brought on by alcohol.’
Robley must also pay £50 prosecution costs which he will pay at a rate of £10 per week, deducted from benefits.
