A 50-year-old Ballasalla woman had to be restrained with Pava spray after kicking two police officers, a court has heard.

Joanne Tiplady appeared in court on August 11, pleading guilty to provoking behaviour as well as two counts of assaulting police officers.

She will be sentenced on September 22 in summary court.

Prosecuting advocate Harry Bellis told the court that police were called to Tiplady’s address, at Kissack Way, by a relative on July 2, at 10.30pm.

They reported that Tiplady had been swearing at her husband and had thrown two phones at him.

When officers arrived they found the defendant asleep in bed.

She was woken and officers told her to get dressed, but she tried to leave the bedroom, which prompted police to block her way.

Tiplady was told she was being arrested, but said: ‘F*** off.’

The officers tried to handcuff her, but she kicked out, striking two of them during a struggle.

She continued to resist, swearing before eventually being restrained using Pava spray.

After being taken to Police Headquarters, Tiplady was later interviewed, but answered ‘no comment’ to all questions.

Mr Bellis said that the defendant did not accept that she threw two phones, and while the prosecution did not agree to that basis of plea, he said he did not feel it would make a material difference to sentencing.

Defence advocate Kaitlyn Shimmin said the assaults had been low-level, with one officer suffering reddening to the neck area, and the other no injuries.

Ms Shimmin said that Tiplady was remorseful and had no previous convictions.

The court heard that she did have a previous caution in 2024 relating to a common assault allegation.

Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood said that she wanted a probation report before sentencing.
