A full-size replica of one of the world’s most famous historic ships is set to make its first visit to Douglas this September as part of a European tour.

The Nao Santa María, a replica of Christopher Columbus’s flagship, will be berthed at Douglas Marina from September 2 to 6, giving visitors the chance to step aboard the vessel and experience what life was like for sailors during the 15th century.

The ship is operated by the Nao Victoria Foundation, a Spanish organisation which promotes maritime history through the operation of replica historic vessels.

Visitors will be able to explore the ship’s decks, cabins and hold, while learning about the voyages that played a significant role in shaping world history and the challenges faced by seafarers more than 500 years ago.

The visit has been organised in partnership with Douglas City Centre Management, whose manager, Oliver Cheshire, commented: ‘Hosting the Nao Santa María is a real coup for Douglas.

‘As one of just 30 ports on this year’s international tour, we’ll be proud to welcome this impressive replica of one of history’s most famous ships.

‘She played such a significant role in the discovery of the Americas and the visit offers a fascinating opportunity to experience a pivotal moment.

‘It’s a unique cultural attraction suitable for all ages and we’re looking forward to welcoming both residents and visitors to the city for what promises to be a memorable few days.’

The Nao Santa María will be open to the public each day from 10am to 8pm while berthed at the marina.

Organisers are advising visitors to book early, as online ticket sales will take priority and tickets may not be available at the quayside if advance sales reach capacity.
