Sidecars will return to the Isle of Man TT next year as part of a new three-year commitment to the class.

This is underpinned by significant changes to technical regulations and sporting format, while the 2027 three-wheel contests will be run over a reduced total distance.

SUSPENSION

The sidecar class was suspended during this year’s meeting due to safety concerns after a red-flag incident involving Manx brothers Ryan and Callum Crowe during qualifying.

A sidecar sustainability review was launched in the wake of the incident to consider the long-term sustainability of sidecar racing at the TT.

The first-stage report – published last month - concluded that there remains strong support for retaining sidecar racing as part of the TT

RETURN

The plans will see two sidecar races scheduled at each TT from 2027 to 2029, providing competitors and constructors with greater certainty as a new generation of three-wheel regulations is introduced.

For TT 2027, both races will be held over two laps of the Mountain Course as part of a controlled first-year return, with race distances for 2028 and 2029 to be reviewed following experience of the new package.

NEW ENGINE DIRECTION

At the heart of the changes will be a move away from the traditional 600cc four-cylinder engine formula towards a new production-derived engine framework aligned with British Sportbike technical regulations.

The new regulations will provide for engines derived from modern middleweight machines including the Yamaha R7, Aprilia RS660 and Kawasaki Ninja 650, alongside other eligible engines within the adopted framework.

The change reflects both the desire to better control sidecar performance and the changing production motorcycle market, with the traditional 600cc four-cylinder Supersport platform becoming increasingly limited in terms of current production machinery and manufacturer development.

Rather than simply restricting the existing formula, the new direction is intended to provide competitors with a more sustainable engine platform capable of evolving in the years ahead.

ELECTRONICS

Control electronics will also move to the Mectronik ECU platform, providing a common electronics framework and giving the TT technical director greater ability to manage and verify the performance envelope of the class.

The new framework will also introduce a balance of performance approach, designed to achieve much closer performance equivalence between eligible engines.

Under the existing formula, significant investment in engine development can provide the best-funded teams with a substantial performance advantage.

The new regulations are intended to reduce that opportunity, creating a more tightly controlled and potentially more competitive field in which outright engine performance is much more closely matched.

CHASSIS AND BODYWORK CHANGES

Existing sidecar chassis designs will continue to be eligible, avoiding the need for competitors to move to a single chassis concept, but new requirements will strengthen technical assurance around construction, identification, modification, repair and inspection.

Bodywork regulations will also be revised, with clearer limits introduced around floors, undertrays, wheel arches and other aerodynamic features. Separate wings, aerofoils, fins and spoilers will be prohibited.

The intention is to reduce aerodynamic development while improving structural integrity, technical inspection and access for medical and rescue personnel.

Further measures covering weight, fluid containment, machine safety and technical compliance will form part of the final regulations.

A CONTROLLED RETURN

The format for 2027 has deliberately been designed as the starting point for the new sidecar formula rather than its finished form.

The established TT qualifying period and sidecar session provision will be retained, while the two shorter races will provide a more conservative race format during the first year of the revised machinery and regulations.

Competitor eligibility and qualification standards will also be strengthened, with greater emphasis placed on recent competitive activity, medical fitness and demonstrated readiness for the demands of the Mountain Course.

FURTHER REVIEW

The performance of the new formula will then be reviewed using technical data, incident evidence, competitor feedback, participation and experience from qualifying and racing before decisions are made on its further development for 2028 and 2029.

Paul Phillips, head of motorsport for the Isle of Man TT Races, explained: 'The objective throughout this process has been to establish whether there is a sustainable future for Sidecar racing at the TT and, if there is, what needs to change to give it the strongest possible foundation.

'We believe there is a future for the class, but simply returning to the previous formula was never going to be the right answer.

'The three-year commitment is important because competitors and constructors need certainty if we're asking them to invest in change. At the same time, we're deliberately starting conservatively in 2027, with two shorter races and a significantly revised technical package.

'This isn't about recreating the sidecar class of the past overnight. It's about establishing a competitive and sustainable platform in 2027 and then developing it properly over the following years.'

Clerk of the course Gary Thompson added: 'The move to the Sportbike engine framework and controlled electronics is a significant change, but it gives us a much greater ability to manage the performance of the class.

'It also recognises where the motorcycle industry is heading. The 600cc four-cylinder platform has served sidecar racing extremely well, but we need a formula based around modern production engines that can remain relevant and sustainable into the future.

'There is an important sporting benefit too. The combination of controlled electronics and balance of performance should allow us to achieve much closer performance equivalence between the different engine configurations and reduce the advantage available simply through spending heavily on engine development.

'The aim is a more controlled and competitive formula, with greater emphasis on preparation, chassis set-up and, ultimately, the performance of the driver and passenger.

'Detailed engine eligibility, permitted modifications, electronics, chassis, bodywork, weight and compliance requirements will now be finalised ahead of publication of the 2027 TT sidecar technical regulations.'
