Repairs to storm-damaged flues at Peel Power Station are entering their final phase, with a specialist crane due to arrive next week.
Several flue components were damaged during Storm Eowyn in January 2025. Although the structures were immediately stabilised and made safe, further repairs and refurbishment have taken longer than expected.
Work began in October 2025 and was initially expected to take just five weeks, with repairs carried out in two phases.
However, the need to manufacture two replacement flue sections considerably delayed completion of the project, with the remaining work now focused on installation.
Those sections have now been built, with final assembly under way at ground level. Weather permitting, a specialist 220-tonne crane will arrive on the island on Wednesday, November 4, before travelling to Peel that evening.
The crane is due to be assembled on Thursday, November 5, with lifting operations scheduled for Thursday afternoon and Friday. It is expected to leave the site and return to the UK over the weekend of November 7 and 8.
Manx Utilities said: ‘These arrangements remain weather dependent and may need to be changed at short notice.
‘The work will involve lifting the final two flue sections into position and will complete this phase of the repair programme.
‘Although Peel Power Station now operates less frequently than in the past, it remains an important backup generation asset, supporting the resilience and security of the island’s electricity supply.
‘Manx Utilities would like to thank nearby residents and the wider Peel community for their understanding while this work is carried out.’
Specialist steeplejacks worked on the structures during summer 2025, accessing the flues using internal ladders and securing them following a drone-assisted survey. Although only one flue failed, repairs have been undertaken on all four.
