A small group of Manx pupils took their protest to Tynwald to join in the worldwide day of ’student strikes’ over climate change.
The action, which saw students across the world walk out of schools and colleges, was condemned by leaders such as Prime Minister Theresa May.
Outside Tynwald on Friday was Toby Miklos, aged seven, from Laxey who said he learnt about climate change at home and in school.
He said: ’We need to make changes. At our school [Laxey Primary School] we have nearly totally banned single use plastics.
’But we need to fix climate change. We could have only 12 years to make a real impact on it.’
His brother, 10-year-old Oliver, said that he also feels it is important to him that we protect the planet and the animals on it.
Oliver added: ’I feel it is important to protect our future, to make sure have a future and I just feel like no one is really doing much about it so I feel that we have to try.
’I’m just a school kid, but the government could do more and they need to.’
The boys’ proud mother Eleanor Miklos told the Examiner: ’Politicians in the island seem to think that no-one cares about climate change.
’But with pride in the island’s Unesco status and issues such as the flooding in Laxey, people have started to take notice more and more.
’I was inspired by the 16-year-old Greta Thunberg who spoke to world leaders about climate change.’
Greta stunned world leaders when she delivered a speech which has been shared around the world.
She said: ’I often hear adults say "we need to give the next generation hope". But I don’t want your hope. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I do every day. And want you to act. I want you to behave like our house is on fire. Because it is.’
A Facebook post by the Isle of Man Green Party said: ’Manx students take part in global action against climate change - when will we see the government take part in global climate change action by asking for the Paris Agreement to be extended?
