Ballakermeen High School has confirmed the death of a Year 8 pupil.

In a letter sent to parents and guardians, the school confirmed the child had died ‘unexpectedly’ and outlined support being made available to those affected.

Isle of Man Today understands the child, aged 12 or 13, died this week.

In the letter, headteacher Graeme Corrin said: ‘We are deeply saddened to share the news that one of our Year 8 students has died unexpectedly.

‘The loss of a young person is something that is felt profoundly across the school community and we know that this news will be difficult for many of our students, families and staff to hear.

‘Our immediate thoughts are with the student’s family and those closest to them, as they begin to come to terms with their loss.

‘When someone dies it is normal for their friends and family to experience lots of different feelings like sadness, anger and confusion.

‘The Department's Bereavement Response Team will be present in school today (Thursday) to support students who may need time to talk things through, and they will provide further support and guidance over the coming days.

‘Thank you for your understanding and support at this very difficult time.’

No further details surrounding the death have been confirmed at this stage.
