A government scheme providing free energy-saving upgrades to island households has been extended, with a further £100,000 secured to help residents manage rising energy bills.

Nearly 4,500 households have benefited from the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture's (DEFA) Energy Efficiency Scheme (EES) since its launch in 2022, with around £1.7 million of home improvements delivered to date.

Eligible residents can receive up to £820 worth of free kit, including loft insulation, LED lightbulbs and smart heating controls, with an additional £525 available towards installation costs for eligible groups. Renters and social housing tenants can also apply.

A household installing all available upgrades could save up to £700 a year on energy bills.

Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture Clare Barber said: ‘Improving the energy efficiency of our homes is one of the most practical steps we can take to help residents manage rising energy costs, while also playing our part in meeting the island's net zero commitments.

‘I'd encourage anyone who hasn't yet applied to check their eligibility.’

More than 200 properties at Kings Reach, Ramsey and Saddle Mews, Douglas have had thick loft insulation installed, with residents saving an estimated £100 to £130 a year on energy bills, plus further savings from installing LED lightbulbs.

Improving home energy efficiency supports the Isle of Man Government's commitment to reaching net zero by 2050.

The government’s Island Plan sets an ambition to substantially decarbonise the services economy by 2030, with a target of 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

DEFA will launch a follow-up scheme later this year to support residents switching to low-carbon heat systems in their homes.
