The Isle of Man’s maritime community will come together on Thursday, September 3 at Arbory Church for a special National Service to Seafarers, recognising the contribution, sacrifice and service of seafarers past and present.

The service, which will start at 7pm, will be conducted by Reverend Simon Archer and is supported by the King George’s Fund for Sailors (Isle of Man) and Isle of Man Maritime.

Organisers say the service provides an opportunity for the island to reflect on its long and proud maritime heritage while recognising the thousands of men and women who continue to serve at sea around the world.

The service will recognise not only those currently serving at sea, but also retired seafarers, those who have lost their lives at sea, and the families and organisations that support the seafaring community.

Captain Lee Clarke, managing director of Isle of Man Maritime and chair of IoMKGFS, said: ‘The Isle of Man has an extraordinary connection with the sea and with those who serve upon it.

‘This service is an important opportunity for us to come together as an island and recognise seafarers everywhere – those serving today, those who served before them and those who sadly never returned home.

‘We would particularly encourage maritime organisations, businesses, government, veterans, cadets and members of the wider community to join us. It would be wonderful to see every part of our maritime community represented.

‘The service also reflects the island’s continuing commitment to seafarer welfare, bringing together the maritime industry, charities, community organisations and individuals who share a commitment to supporting those who live and work at sea.’

Maritime organisations across the island are encouraged to send a representative, and the service is open to members of the public who wish to attend and show their support.
