The current president of Tynwald has announced his intention to retire from political office.

Laurence Skelly has confirmed he will not seek re-election when his current term concludes on July 21.

Mr Skelly was elected to the presidency in 2021, following a decade of service as a member of the House of Keys, during which he also spent more than seven years serving in ministerial roles.

‘After 15 years in public office, I have taken the decision not to seek re-election and to retire from political life,’ Mr Skelly explained.

‘It has been a very great privilege to serve the people of Rushen and the Isle of Man, both as an MHK and as president of Tynwald.

‘As a Manxman, to have served as president during these past five years has been the greatest honour.

‘I remain sincerely grateful to my former constituents and to colleagues across Tynwald for the confidence and support they have shown to me.

‘I wish also to place on record my appreciation for the many members of staff with whom I have had the privilege of working, whose dedication, talent and passion help benefit our island daily.’

Looking ahead, Mr Skelly indicated that he plans to remain active in the Isle of Man community after stepping down.

His future activities are expected to include involvement in family businesses, as well as contributions to cultural, heritage, and charitable initiatives across the island.

‘Tynwald is the Isle of Man’s most ancient institution, and the responsibility of upholding its integrity and traditions is of the greatest importance to our identity and nation,’ Mr Skelly added.

‘It is my sincere hope that future generations will continue to respect, value and safeguard our unique parliament.’

The election for the next president of Tynwald is scheduled to take place on July 21 2026, with the successful candidate then serving a five-year term until 2031.
