Two young robotics competitors from Code Club Isle of Man are set to represent the island at an international World Robot Olympiad competition in California this weekend.

Scott Reid and Robert Corrin, competing as team Manx Matrix, will take part in the WRO Open Championship Americas from Friday September 25 to Sunday September 27.

The World Robot Olympiad is an international robotics programme in which young people design, build and programme robots while developing skills in engineering, problem-solving, creativity and teamwork.

The team secured its place at the international competition after progressing through this year's UK World Robot Olympiad competition.

Following success at the regional tournament in Edinburgh in June, Manx Matrix competed at the UK National Finals in Leicester in July, where its performance earned qualification for the event in California.

The competition will mark an international milestone for Scott and Robert, who have spent months developing, testing and refining their robot in preparation for the challenges involved.

Owen Cutajar, chair and founder of Code Club Isle of Man, said: ‘We are incredibly proud of Scott and Robert and everything they have achieved as Manx Matrix.

‘Reaching an international World Robot Olympiad event is a huge accomplishment and gives them the opportunity to compete alongside young people from around the world.

‘The competition itself is important, but the real value is in the journey that gets them there. They have had to solve difficult problems, work through setbacks, make decisions as a team and continually improve what they have built.

‘Those are skills that go far beyond robotics, and the experience of competing internationally will stay with them for a long time.’

Manx Matrix's appearance in California follows a year of international competition for Code Club Isle of Man, with two other Manx teams due to travel to Croatia in October to compete in another World Robot Olympiad international event.
