Three groups are to continue the isle of Architecture’s on-going ’Gigs in unusual spaces’ next week, with a one-off concert at the iconic Peel Lifeboat house.
Clash Vooar, the Mollag band and the youth folk group Scran will be appearing in what the organisers describe as ’fabulous folk extravaganza’ to celebrate the boat house on Friday, June 16.
Breeshey Maddrell, who both sings with Clash Vooar and is a team member of the Isle of Architecture, is delighted to be able to play in another unsual space. She also sings with the gaelic choir Caarjyn Cooidjagh who admirably displayed the acoustics of the Villa Marina Arcade toilets, when they sang there last month.
’Both as part of the team behind Isle of Architecture and as a member of Clash Vooar I’m really excited to be part of this very special gig,’ says Breesha.
’Experiencing and exploiting the acoustics of buildings not designed for live music is always a challenge, but one which any musician enjoys.
’Our music is written and performed to be heard in spaces big and small, so to be performing in a building which is so central to the lives of the people of Peel, and to the many sailors and fishermen out in the Irish Sea, is a real privilege.
’With my own family connections to the RNLI, I’m delighted that proceeds from the event will support this very important charity.’
Mollag Band bassist Dave McLean says he is also looking forward to it.
’Appearing at the Lifeboat Station gig is taking our music a step further than even the original Mollags ever went.
’The ’New History of the Isle of Man’ describes our predecessors as ’performing bawdy and riotous songs in the streets and in the homes of anyone who would let them enter’ so we’re just following this tradition with a healthy dose of foot-stomping music down below Peel Castle.’
Scran, who are comprised of members of the ’Bree’ youth music group, have been making a well-respected name for themselves in recent months, first as runner up in the Next Big Thing at the Gaiety Theatre in March, and appearing at pop-up music events around the island.
Tickets for the evening, which begins at 7.30pm, are £5, available through iomarchitecture.com or through their Facebook page.
